Tea Party social and political issues - Conservative News and Views

The US Constitution

The writer of a recent article made the claim that the Tea Party is ??a movement that has its roots solely in the fiscal calamities facing this nation.? This is incorrect and ignores other and more fundamental issues extant in the movement.

The Gadsden flag: symbol of the Tea Party

Christopher Gadsden's "Don't Tread On Me" flag, the unofficial symbol of the Tea Party movement. Photo: User VIkrum/Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0 Unported License

The writer also lamented the possibility of a ?hijack? of the movement. The catalyst for the formation of the Tea Party may have been the fiscal disaster that is unfolding, but the Tea Party phenomenon exploded precisely because it gave vent to a wide assortment of issues that have festered for years. These issues are all related to the loss of freedom in America. If a ?hijack? has occurred, our government did it. They hijacked the cultural identity of this country and replaced the individual as the premier entity in the social construct. They did this over the course of many years through the replacement of religion in the West with a thoroughly secular culture. The secularized government has usurped the position of moral arbiter within society by occupying the vacuum it created in western culture when it dethroned religion as the operative belief system in people?s lives.

Having done that, it is only logical that the state demands control over all aspects of life. Of course the state will show no fiscal restraint when dealing with the money they have confiscated from the citizenry. Why should it? The attitude of the state is, to paraphrase Mohammed: ?There is no god but the state.? If the state is all, then?how can any individual maintain a claim on their wealth or their very personhood? In a truly secular society, the citizen owes their very life to the state. Don?t we see that played out now in the various initiatives undertaken by the current regime? The health care initiative clearly demonstrates that the lives of the citizens are subject to the requirements of the state. The so-called death panels and the proposed withholding of medication in the latter phases of life could not illustrate this any better. The value of any individual has been reduced to a mere monetary calculus. How could it be otherwise in a purely secular state?

The most obnoxious result of this is a gruesome calculation: the death toll of 50 million unborn babies in the United States since the invention of the ?right? of a mother to extinguish the life of her unborn baby. This interference in the natural progression of life was never the flowering of individual freedom as it has been portrayed in our ?culture of death?, but was imposed upon us by our secular ?Mullahs? in the Supreme Court. ?The abortion decision is not merely execrable, but is both the real and symbolic execution of Liberty i n America.

The writer seemed to miss the significance of his own statement warning of the intrusion of government into the doctor-patient relationship of its citizens. It?s not that a government who aborts will find it easy to ?intrude? in the ?doctor-patient? relationship ? the problem is that a government who finds it easy to kill babies is a government that can find it easy to kill patients ? and doctors.

The writer praised predictable boilerplate language in one tea party manifesto which lists as one of their paramount concerns the ??moral rights to life?? Clearly the irony here escaped the writer?

The real struggle between the citizen and the state is a religious struggle, and anyone unwilling to accept this is unprepared to confront tyranny and resist the overreaching leviathan that is our state. Can one really believe that freedom boils down to mere adjustments in the tax rate? That if we suddenly reduce the budget to a manageable number freedom will bloom everywhere? We have a cadre of criminals in charge of the monetary system in this country. They are able to exercise control precisely because they (and we) believe there is no higher law, no morality that can be summoned to restrain their avarice. How could there be when most of us believe that morals are ?relative?, and a private affair. We will have freedom only when the God-given right of the individual to live a free and undisturbed life is recognized again as the only basic right that government should guarantee, and of course that includes the right of a pre-natal or just-born-baby to breathe its first breath and not have its throat slit by a ?Medical Professional? as it exits its mother?s womb.

The Tea Party movement is replete with the symbolism of the American Revolution and identifies with its founders. This is apparent in the ostentatious display of colonial flags and the like at tea Party Functions. Many in our movement casually adorn themselves with these trappings of freedom like so much costumery at a masked ball, yet they ignore what these trappings mean: the revolutionary belief that God is the fount of our freedoms. Such ignorance represents a total repudiation of the beliefs that motivated the founders, but worse it is also to abandon the strongest weapon that the founders bequeathed to us, which was their unshakeable faith in God.

If the Tea Party devolves into a movement the only concern of which is ?fiscal issues? then it will become irrelevant. Yes, the movement may get taxes reduced a little; or cut some fat from the budget. But that?s no real victory. That doesn?t stop the secular leviathan from returning to profligacy in spite of the ?fiscally conservative Tea Party.? The state will still reign supreme and will demand obeisance because its core identity ? that of supreme authority ? will not have been seriously challenged. In fact the opposite will occur. ?Once the Tea Party eschews engagement with the state over moral issues it will have tacitly endorsed the supremacy of the state and therefore enhanced its power ? a failure of leadership that will be fatal to freedom in the country.

With likely 'Kindle' tablet, Amazon takes on Apple

NEW YORK (AP) ? So far, no company has been able to even come close to rival the success of Apple's iPad, but with the expected unveiling of its version of a tablet computer Wednesday, analysts say Amazon has a real chance.

Amazon.com Inc. is nearly unique in its ability to sell content such as e-books, movies and music suited for a tablet, just like Apple does. In addition, the "Kindle" tablet could be a reminder, right in the owner's hands, to buy general merchandise from Amazon. Running out of toilet paper? Just add it to your Amazon shopping cart.

"In essence, the Kindle is a Trojan horse for Amazon's retail and media brands," said Morgan Keegan analyst Justin Patterson.

Seattle-based Amazon hasn't confirmed that it's launching a tablet, but it's holding an event in New York on Wednesday morning, with its CEO Jeff Bezos speaking.

With the iPad, Apple has created a whole new product category of tablet computers. Many have tried to copy its success, but so far, the iPad is the only really successful product. Apple sold 28.7 million of them from April 2010 to June 2011. Analysts at research firm Gartner Inc. expect the iPad to account for three out of four tablet sales this year.

Analysts believe Amazon's new tablet will come in two sizes: one with a screen that's 7 inches on the diagonal, a bit larger than the Kindle e-reader, and one that's 10 inches, slightly bigger than the iPad.

They also expect Amazon to subsidize the cost of the tablet, on the expectation that it will make the money back when owners buy things through the tablet. That might allow the company to undercut Apple on price, something other manufacturers have had a hard time doing. Apple's profit margin on the iPad, which starts at $499, is lower than it is for many of its other products, particularly the iPhone.

"Amazon's willingness to sell hardware at a loss, combined with the strength of its brand, content, cloud infrastructure, and commerce assets, makes it the only credible iPad competitor in the market," wrote Forrester analyst Sarah Rotman Epps.

Epps believes Amazon can sell 3 million to 5 million tablets in the fourth quarter. That compares with Apple selling 9.3 million iPads in the April to June period.

Shawn Milne, an analyst with Janney Capital Markets, expects Amazon to charge $250 for its tablet, "especially if it's wrapped with one-year free membership" to its express shipping service, the $79-per-year Prime, and strong video and other content. He expects Amazon to sell 2 million to 3 million units before a "beefed up" version with a larger screen likely becomes available in the first quarter.

Two other companies are treading the same path as Amazon, but they don't have quite Amazon's heft. One is Barnes & Noble Inc., which launched a "Nook Color" e-reader last year that's nearly indistinguishable from a small tablet. It has a color screen, runs a version of Google Inc.'s Android operating system and accepts third-party apps. It's also modestly priced at $250. Yet Barnes & Noble sees it first and foremost as an e-reader, not as a springboard into competition with a full-blown tablet like the iPad.

Sony Corp.'s first iPad-style tablet, which started shipping two weeks ago, is linked to the company's online movie and music stores. It's set up to capitalize on Sony's library of PlayStation games as well, but so far, only plays a few of them. However, Sony doesn't come close to matching the breadth of content in Apple's iTunes store.

This year, Amazon started streaming movies for no extra charge to customers who've signed up for its Prime premium shipping program. On Monday, it added TV shows and movies from News Corp.'s 20th Century Fox studio, bringing the total number of streaming titles to 11,000 titles. That's about half of what Netflix's streaming library has.

Analysts also see Amazon as a possible bidder for Hulu, the TV-streaming website.

The question is: What unique features can Amazon bundle into its tablet that might compel consumers to choose it over an iPad? There's not that much an Amazon tablet could do that the iPad can't. The iPad can be used to read books from Amazon and Barnes & Noble, even if Apple's restrictions now make it harder to buy books directly from these stores. It can be used for general shopping from Amazon. The iPad plays movies and TV shows from Netflix and Hulu, and has access to tens of thousands of applications and games in the App Store.

On the application side, the Amazon tablet will start out at a big disadvantage, just like all the other iPad competitors. It might be able to run tablet apps from Google's marketplace, but both the selection and quality is lower than in Apple's store.

Amazon shares rose $2.29, or 1 percent, to $226.50 in premarket trading Wednesday.

From Brian's Song to Terms of Endearment, Cancer's 5 Greatest ...

Leader image for From Brian's Song to Terms of Endearment, Cancer's 5 Greatest Screen Performances

Single-named phenomenon Cancer has a deservedly chilly reputation outside of Hollywood, but in films, the heterogeneous class of diseases inhabits a world all its own as a performer, provocateur and villain. In this week?s 50/50, Cancer arrives with a harrumph and lingers like a noxious haze, making it the Joan Crawford of 2011. This begs the question: What are Cancer?s five greatest performances in cinema? The answer will force you into a beautiful monologue.

5. Brian?s Song
Cancer smartly appealed to the male population in one of its first starring outings, choosing to illuminate the plight of football icon Brian Piccolo. In this landmark TV movie, James Caan plays the sick star, and Billy Dee Williams plays Gale Sayers, the Bears legend who gives a thoughtful, poignant speech about his friend. Note the fearsome presence of Cancer, which pervades the room with real star potential.

4. Dying Young
Here it is: Cancer?s guilty pleasure. While many tearjerker illness films softly tread on past successes in the same subgenre, Julia Roberts cries ultra-loudly in this romantic yarn with Campbell Scott. It?s the right movie to cry at, even if the characters are more interesting than the predicament they?re in. Cancer likes to pretend it did a lot of the work here, but our titular duo is compelling enough without a life-threatening circumstances. You?re righteous, Cancer, but you?re not the true star here!

3. One True Thing
Realism is important, and nobody knows this better than Cancer. In this family drama, we watch as Renee Zellweger comes to grips with her parents ? especially her mother (Meryl Streep), whose sickness requires a frosty Zellweger to move in and learn how to take care of her. It?s a movie that won?t wow you with Cancer?s range, but its fiery antagonism is never in question, even if Cancer is often soft-spoken throughout this movie.

2. Terms of Endearment
Cancer barely even read the script for the first half of Terms of Endearment, and in the second half, it hogged all the attention and forced Debra Winger and Shirley MacLaine to schedule around it. This is where it becomes a story with a semblance of a spine. Sure, MacLaine and Nicholson scored Academy wins, but it?s Cancer that brought them to their best point. It?s the performance that makes you forgive Cancer?s gimmicky, cloying performances in movies like Love Story and The Family Stone.

1. Wit
After Cancer accepted that it was never going to win the Oscar, it downgraded itself to the small screen figuring its polarizing technique would work on pay-cable. Cancer was right. In this Mike Nichols-helmed HBO adaptation of Margaret Edson?s Pulitzer-winning play, Emma Thompson triumphs as the terminally ill professor Vivian Bearing, whose comprehension of John Donne?s works helps propel her through incessant rounds of chemotherapy. Cancer is a jack-of-all-trades in this movie, moving gracefully from lighthearted moments into utter devastation, and that?s why Wit topples a Best Picture like Terms of Endearment. It?s poetic, but unpretentious. And the Cancer finds a way into every verse, breath and punctuation mark of Vivian?s journey, taking on layered meanings as she deciphers the segue (or is it a comma?) between life and death. C?mon, Cancer deserved a Saturn Award here. At least.

Researchers map genome of advanced, lethal prostate cancers and discover 'hypermutation'

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2011) ? A team of researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the University of Washington has conducted the first comprehensive assessment of every gene in the genome of advanced, lethal prostate cancer. Until now, the genetic composition of such tumors had been poorly defined.

In the process, they have discovered a number of potential key drivers -- recurrent genetic mistakes -- common to advanced prostate cancer that may contribute to disease progression. The researchers also have identified several instances of genetic "hypermutation," a gross excess of single-letter DNA "spelling errors" that could cause the cancer to become resistant to therapies commonly used to slow the progression of advanced prostate cancer, such as androgen-blocking drugs and surgical castration.

Corresponding authors Peter S. Nelson, M.D., a member of the Hutchinson Center's Human Biology Division, and Jay Shendure, M.D., Ph.D., an associate professor of Genome Sciences at UW and an affiliate member of the Hutchinson Center's Human Biology Division, and colleagues report their findings Sept. 26 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Early Edition. The lead author of the paper was Akash Kumar, a graduate student in Genome Sciences and an M.D.-Ph.D. candidate at UW.

"The most interesting finding to come out of our DNA sequencing project was the discovery of three aggressive tumor types that had 10 times the number of mutations compared to the other advanced prostate cancers we studied," Nelson said. "That was very surprising and unusual. We don't know the cause of these hypermutated tumors, but the frequency of the mutations suggests these tumors might evolve very rapidly to develop resistance to therapies."

The discovery of these genetic mutations should provide clues that illuminate why some prostate cancers are lethal, and potentially could be used to develop screening tests for early detection or drug targets to slow or halt cancer growth, Nelson said.

"The mutations underlying the progression of prostate cancer to an advanced state have been understudied to date," Shendure said. "Although further work is certainly necessary, our hope is that identifying the genes in which these mutations occur will facilitate biological insights and the development of new therapeutic strategies."

For the study, the researchers determined the mutational status of 23 aggressive and lethal, drug-resistant human prostate cancers, including those that had metastasized, or spread, beyond their primary site of origin and those that had not. They used a technology called exome sequencing to survey the mutational landscape. This method is more efficient and cost-effective than whole-genome sequencing because it zeroes in on just 1 percent of the human genome -- the exome -- a highly functional region that harbors the majority of disease-causing mutations.

In aggressive tumors, the researchers identified a number of genes with recurrent germline (inheritable) or somatic (noninheritable) mutations, including variants in TP53, a gene that encodes tumor protein p53, which normally functions as a tumor suppressor; and GPC6, a gene that encodes glypican-6, which regulates cell growth and division. They also found recurrent mutations in several genes whose mechanisms in prostate cancer development are not yet well understood, as well as thousands of individual, or "personal," mutations unique to individual tumors.

The researchers also found that of nearly 90 mutations associated with tumors that are resistant to testosterone suppression -- a common treatment for advanced prostate cancer -- each tumor studied had at least one mutation in the Wnt signaling pathway, a network of proteins known to play a variety of important roles in embryonic development and cancer, among other things.

Nelson and researchers at the Hutchinson Center contributed to the concepts underlying the study and confirmed the identified mutations using alternate technologies. Shendure and colleagues at the UW provided key tissue samples and a majority of the exome sequencing and analysis, among other contributions.

Funding for the research came from the U.S. Department of Defense, National Institutes of Health, Richard M. Lucas Foundation, Prostate Cancer Foundation and Pacific Northwest Prostate Cancer Specialized Programs of Research Excellence.

NASA says 'we may never know' where runaway satellite crashed (The Christian Science Monitor)

Atlanta ? The mystery of where a runaway research satellite plunged to earth may remain just that unless NASA receives "credible" leads in the next few days as to the whereabouts of the fallen space junk, one of the agency's top scientists says.

Best estimates from several international space agencies put the reentry point of the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, a bus-sized space traveler launched from the Space Shuttle in 1991, in the Pacific Ocean southwest of Washington State, in which case some 26 jagged chunks of space debris ? some weighing as much as 300 pounds ? most likely dropped into the ocean and disappeared.

"We may never know" where the satellite pieces landed, Nick Johnson, the chief scientist with NASA's Orbital Debris Program, told reporters on Saturday. So far, NASA has not been able to confirm as credible several reports from the Calgary area ? including YouTube video and Twitter accounts ? that purported to show pieces of the satellite raining down early Saturday morning.

IN PICTURES: Stuff in Earth orbit

But the agency also acknowledged that it does not know exactly when the satellite entered the earth's atmosphere, which leaves open the possibility that pieces reached land. The best guess is that the UARS fell through the atmosphere at 12:16 A.M. Saturday, which would have put a debris field up to 500 miles long off the west coast of the US. The agency acknowledged, however, that even a minor miscalculation could mean debris fell on Washington State or parts of southwestern Canada.

"Because we don't know where reentry point actually was, we don't know where debris field might be," said Dr. Johnson. "I've got no reports that I've seen that talk about people who might have recovered debris, but we'll continue to keep our eyes and ears open, and if we receive any reports like that we'll try to go verify."

Uncontrolled reentry of man-made space junk is fairly common. But the size of the UARS ? it weighed about 6 tons ? made it the largest runaway reentry of a satellite since Skylab fell in 1979, with some pieces landing in Australia.

The UARS returning uncontrolled to earth caught the public's imagination and even raised mild concern, though chances of anybody getting struck by debris were about 1 in 3,200. It also drew attention to the growing amounts of space junk orbiting the earth, as well as the sheer difficulties of tracking orbiting material as it reenters the earth's atmosphere.

Up to the last minutes before impact, NASA and other space agencies adjusted their predictions as the spacecraft seemed to skip and tumble across the outer skin of Earth's atmosphere. But more than 12 hours after orbiting space sensors could no longer find the satellite in orbit, NASA scientists lean toward the theory that at least most of the satellite chunks missed land.

"There were several folks along the western coast of North America and the US northwest and Canadian southwest that were actually looking to observe UARS as it came over, and every one of those attempts came up negative," said Mr. Johnson. "That would suggest that reentry did occur before it reached the North American coast, and most of the debris fell into the Pacific."

Dental Sciences ? of Schools and Colleges - Education

Dentistry is another branch of science which deals with the oral cavity of a human being. It is relatively new as it hasn't yet gained as much popularity as MBBS and has not yet attracted a large number of students. The person who studies the dental sciences is known as a dentist and helps with the dental problems of the people as well as giving tips to prevent diseases. In earlier times not a lot of people were attracted to dentistry nor was it considered as important as any other doctor. Very few people chose to study it and no specific schools or colleges were made to impart the dental knowledge. Students who were interested in learning this subject often had to choose another career as very limited numbers of seats were available for the students. But with the advent of time people started to see the potential in this field and a number ofschool for dentistrywere opened.

The study of dentistry was and still is very expensive and cannot be afforded by everyone but it is a very profitable profession. Initially when there weren't a lot of institutions available for this mode of study a lot of students, who wanted to opt for it, were left frustrated and annoyed about not being able to choose and were thus forced to switch to a different line of education which was not of their interest but was satisfactory.

When this became evident that a lot of students wanted to pursue a career in dentistry, it is no wonder thatcollege for dentistrywere opened and these students were given a better chance to fulfill their dreams and to opt for a field of their own choice rather than being forced to choose a field they had no interest in.

these colleges appointed the best teachers to pass on knowledge to these students and was made sure that the best available guidance is provided to the students. The knowledge of dentistry is not an easy one to gain so a lot of attention is needed to master everything as it is more of a practical purpose. It is also very crucial as the oral cavity is a very sensitive part of the human structure and is prone to germs and bacteria.

Differentcollege of dental sciencesoffer different courses and the prices of these courses vary. As this is a known fact that the dental education is very expensive and not everyone can afford it some very promising and bright students have to leave the studies as they don't have the financial resources to obtain that education. To make sure that no gifted student is left behind these colleges have introduced scholarships which facilitate the student in getting the best form of education but he/she needs to maintain a certain grade so that the scholarship continues which means that a student studying on scholarship cannot slack behind and has to put in a lot of effort in the studies.

Obama rolling back Bush-era education law

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama, trying to energize school performance at the local level, wants to give states the flexibility to opt out of provisions of the No Child Left Behind law, a Bush-era education initiative that has grown increasingly unpopular as more schools risk being labeled a failure.

Under the plan Obama was to outline Friday, states would be allowed to ask the Education Department to be exempted from some of the law's requirements if they meet certain conditions. That includes enacting standards to prepare students for college and careers and setting evaluation standards for teachers and principals.

"To help states, districts and schools that are ready to move forward with education reform, our administration will provide flexibility from the law in exchange for a real commitment to undertake change," Obama said in a statement Thursday. "The purpose is not to give states and districts a reprieve from accountability, but rather to unleash energy to improve our schools at the local level."

The administration says it is acting because Congress has been slow to address the issues by rewriting the law.

But Rep. John Kline, R-Minn., who chairs the House Education Committee, has questioned whether the Education Department has the authority to offer waivers. He's said the president has allowed "an arbitrary timeline" to dictate when Congress should get the law rewritten and that the committee needs more time to develop its proposals.

Kline on Thursday called the administration's plan a political move and said he could not support a process that sets a precedent by granting the education secretary "sweeping authority to handpick winners and losers."

Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., the ranking member on the Senate committee that oversees education, said the president's plan would undermine the policymaking authority of Congress.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan has said the plan would not undermine efforts in Congress because the waivers could serve as a bridge until Congress acts.

Duncan said the emphasis would be more on growth than on test scores.

"We can't have a law on the books that's slowing down progress, that's slowing down innovation," he said Thursday in Joplin, Mo., where schools were left in ruins after a tornado in May.

The No Child Left Behind law passed in 2001 with widespread bipartisan support and much fanfare. It sought to hold schools more accountable for student performance and get better qualified teachers into the classrooms. It also offered school choice and extra tutoring to students attending schools deemed failing.

In Obama's plan, states granted waivers would have more control over how troubled schools are handled, although to qualify for a waiver they would have to show they had a plan to help low-performing schools.

Critics say the law placed too much emphasis on standardized tests, raising the stakes so high for school districts that it may have even driven some school officials to cheat. In particular, the requirement that all students be on grade level in math and reading by 2014 has been hugely unpopular.

Duncan has warned that 82 percent of schools next year could fail to reach proficiency requirements and thus be labeled "failures," although some experts questioned the figure.

He has said it is "dishonest" for schools to be labeled as failing if they are showing real improvements and that the law is creating a "slow-motion educational train wreck." Duncan also has said that many states under the law have lowered standards instead of making them more rigorous.

The law has been due for a rewrite since 2007. Obama and Duncan had asked Congress to overhaul it by the start of this school year but a growing ideological divide in Congress has complicated efforts to do so.

The GOP-led House Education Committee has forwarded three bills that would revamp aspects of the law but has yet to fully tackle some of the more contentious issues such as teacher effectiveness and accountability.

Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., a former U.S. education secretary, said waivers should be limited.

Diana Nyad mounts new attempt at Florida swim (AP)

HAVANA ? Endurance athlete Diana Nyad was preparing Friday for her second attempt this year to swim from Cuba to Florida and set a world record at age 62, a month after a crippling asthma attack forced her from the water gasping for breath.

Nyad told reporters she would spend the day meeting with her support team, carbo-loading and loosening up before setting out from Havana's Hemingway Marina in the evening. She hoped to take advantage of what she called a "magical window" of calm seas and favorable weather forecast to last through the weekend.

The Los Angeles woman said last month that there would be no repeat after her Aug. 7 attempt ended 29 hours and about 50 miles (80 kilometers) into the 103-mile (166-kilometer) journey.

"Don't listen to athletes when they say it's over," she told a news conference at the marina Friday. Nyad likened herself to former boxer Roberto Duran, who retired in 1998 at the age of 47 only to re-enter the ring a year later.

Nyad denied that her problems last time had anything to do with her age, saying she could have fought through the choppy waves and "excruciating" shoulder pain. But she hadn't anticipated the 11-hour asthma attack that was provoked by a medicine she had never used before and had her flailing through the water "like a dying, floundering fish."

In the ensuing weeks she concluded that the aborted attempt was not so much a failure as a dress rehearsal, an unplanned but necessary part of a training regimen that included a bunch of shorter swims.

"The asthma took me down, but ironically enough, that 29-hour swim was like a very, very expensive training swim," said Nyad, who earlier this year estimated that it took a half-million dollars to get her to the first attempt.

"I'm in better shape than before. I'm more prepared than ever," she added.

Nyad set a 6 p.m. start time ? around when powerful thunderstorms unleash dramatic lightning displays like clockwork on a near-daily basis during the Cuban summer. Seas around Havana were flat as a plate in the early afternoon, however.

If she succeeds, Nyad would break her own 102.5-mile (165-kilometer) record for open-water swimming without the aid of a shark cage, relying instead on special equipment that surrounds her with an electric current imperceptible to humans but strong enough to keep most of the predators at bay.

Divers in kayaks will be paddling alongside to gently prod away any sharks that make it through.

For the length of the crossing, Nyad will not be allowed to touch the boat if the record is to count. Nor can her team physically aid her other than to pass her food, medicine, a new swimsuit and so on.

She will try to sustain her energy by eating the likes of peanut butter sandwiches and pasta, and said she sings Beatles, Bob Dylan and Janis Joplin songs in her head to keep her mind occupied especially during nighttime.

"I never ever ? it's the cardinal rule ? I never look up because it's very depressing to see the horizon with no lights, no nothing. And I never ask my trainer here in the boat what time it is or, 'Are we almost there yet?'" Nyad said. "They're going to tell me when we're about 10 hours away."

Nyad first tried to cross the Florida Straits as a 28-year-old back in 1978, when she swam inside a steel shark cage for about 42 hours before ending the attempt.

Now 62 after celebrating her birthday Aug. 22, she has said she hopes to inspire people to lead active lives into their golden years. She also has called the swim symbolic for increasing understanding between the United States and Cuba, two nations torn by five decades of animosity and mistrust.

Marina commodore Jose Miguel Diaz Escrich, whom Nyad describes as a cherished friend and who helped with logistics in Cuba, presented her with an honorary membership in the nautical club and called the swim a "bridge of friendship" between the countries.

"He who tries has already succeeded," Escrich said in encouragement, quoting famed Cuban poet and independence hero Jose Marti.

Nyad's team hoped to attempt the swim in 2010, but was unable to make arrangements in time. This year Cuban officials have been very supportive in arranging logistics and news media coverage.

"We're ready for everything that could possibly come our way this time," Nyad said, "and I just can't imagine any ending other than the ending that I want, which is to get all the way across."

"It's a dream a long time coming."

Powerful typhoon headed toward Japan disaster zone (AP)

TOKYO ? A powerful typhoon was bearing down on Japan's tsunami-ravaged northeastern coast Wednesday, approaching a nuclear power plant crippled in that disaster and prompting calls for the evacuation of more than a million people.

Police and local media reported that five people were dead or missing after being swept away by rivers swollen with rain as Typhoon Roke approached.

The storm, packing sustained winds of up to 100 mph (162 kph), made landfall in the afternoon near the central Japanese city of Hamamatsu, about 125 miles (200 kilometers) west of Tokyo. The storm was expected to cut a path northeast through the capital and into the northeastern region of Tohoku, which was devastated by the March 11 tsunami and earthquake.

Also in the path of the storm is the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, which started spewing radiation after it was sent into meltdown by the tsunami.

Takeo Iwamoto, spokesman for Tokyo Electric Power Co., the utility that operates the plant, said the cooling system for the reactors, crucial to keeping them under control, will not be endangered by the typhoon.

He said some construction work around the plant was canceled and utmost efforts were under way to prevent leaks of radioactive water and other material from the typhoon.

Japanese media reports said more than a million people have been ordered or advised to evacuate across the country as their homes may be flooded or buried in mudslides triggered by the typhoon. The numbers varied, as there is no nationwide tally, and the situation has been flexible. The Mainichi nationwide newspaper reported 1.4 million people were issued evacuation warnings, while the Yomiuri newspaper put the number at 1.2 million.

The city of Nagoya temporarily called off an evacuation warning for 880,000 people when swelling in a major river subsided, but officials said the warning could be reissued if conditions warranted.

Heavy rains caused floods and road damage in dozens of locations in Nagoya and several other cities, the Aichi prefectural (state) government said.

Television footage showed people wading through water up to their knees in Nagoya, 170 miles (270 kilometers) west of Tokyo. In parts of the city near swollen rivers, rescue workers helped residents evacuate in rubber boats.

Police in nearby Gifu prefecture said a 9-year-old boy and an 84-year-old man were missing after apparently falling into swollen rivers.

The storm was bringing rain and wind to the Tokyo area and commuters were being warned to go home early before the heart of the system hits the capital later Wednesday.

More than 200 domestic flights were canceled and some bullet train services were suspended, according to the Kyodo News service.

Toyota Motor Corp., Japan's No. 1 automaker, which is headquartered in Toyota city in Aichi, was shutting plants as a precaution.

Machinery maker Mitsubishi Heavy Industries told workers to stay home at its five plants and an office in the Nagoya area, company spokesman Hideo Ikuno said.

Nissan Motor Co. spokesman Chris Keeffe said workers at its Yokohama headquarters and nearby technical facilities were being told to go home early for safety reasons, and two plants were not operating.

A typhoon that slammed Japan earlier this month left about 90 people dead or missing.

Health and Fitness ? Hypertension: Managing High Blood Pressure ...

Managing our high blood pressure is challenging, especially for those who are recently diagnosed as having hypertension. We must accept that there is no ?cure? for our condition. That means stepping up to the challenge of managing our condition. Where should we start? The starting point may surprise you.It is?.

Accepting responsibility

For very many of us, we are used to visiting our doctor?s office or the pharmacy to get a cure for our ailment. We have abdicated responsibility for our treatment to the physician and pharmacist. Our health is too important to do that, we must be responsible for our health and that includes managing our high blood pressure. I say ?managing? our condition because there is no cure for hypertension only management. That means we must?

Modify our diet

We have all heard and read the healthy eating advice. Now is the time to put that advice into practice. In doing so, we are going to have to change our dietary habits, which will take time. Some diet companies say it can take as long as 38 days to permanently change our eating habits. So, do not try to build Rome in a day. The dietary advice is simple:

?

  • reduce the amount of salt you add to your food. Work towards cutting out additional salt altogether
  • cut down on the high fat highly processed foods and snack foods
  • eat a variety of fruits and vegetables of all colours
  • choose lean white meat instead of fatty red meats
  • eat at least two portions of fish a week, one of white fish, the other being an oily fish
  • grill, bake or poach your food in preference to frying
  • cut back on sodas and caffeinated drinks and try to drink about two litres of water a day

?

Having a healthy balanced diet is a great start to managing our high blood pressure, but we need to do more?.

Get active

Building physical activities into your daily schedule is the best way to take exercise. Walking is the most natural form of exercise. Walk a little bit further and a little bit faster than you normally do. Do this for at least thirty minutes in total every day. Take the stairs at work instead of the elevator. These simple forms of exercise are very effective at helping to lower your high blood pressure.

As a natural consequence of having a healthy balanced diet and being more physically active, you will?

Lose weight

Being overweight contributes to our hypertension and can also lead to the development of life threatening conditions, particularly if associated with a poor diet and sedentary lifestyle. Losing excess weight is an effective way of reducing our hypertension.

Reduce alcohol consumption

There is a direct correlation between the amount of alcohol we consume and our blood pressure. Although there may be some health benefits in moderate alcohol consumption, the more we drink, the higher is our hypertension. Sticking within the recommended weekly consumption guidelines will help to manage our condition within safe limits. We must also?

Quit smoking

There are many general health benefits to quitting smoking. Although smoking tobacco products does not directly cause our hypertension, indirectly it does make a significant contribution. Few people can give up instantly, most need to be weaned off ?the weed? over a period of time. The beneficial effects of doing so for managing our high blood pressure are worth the effort.

Monitor your condition

When it comes to managing hypertension studies have shown that those who regularly monitor their blood pressure at home do a better job of it than those who do not. You should keep a record of the readings you take and show them to your doctor. This will help him or her make a more informed clinical judgment about your condition.

Modifying your lifestyle as suggested above is the key to effective management of your high blood pressure.

Long Term Care Insurance with Kurt Lauman
Does Your 401k Need Long-Term Care Insurance?
Kurt Lauman a Long Term Care Insurance Specialist & Partner with LTC Financial Partners, LLC (LTCFP). LTCFP is a licensed insurance agency that specializes in Long Term Care Insurance (LTCi). Our mission is to provide you with excellent service, helpful advice, and useful resources nationwide concerning Long Term Care Insurance. Recommends a LTCi Policy to Protect Your Retirement Savings as Well as Your Health and Independence.
People need long-term care insurance, but the question is, does your retirement funds? "Absolutely," says Kurt Lauman, Kirkland-based agent and partner with LTC Financial Partners, LLC. (LTCFP). "If you're not thinking about your own health as you age, think about the health of your retirement funds, 401k, or IRA. If your retirement vehicle becomes disabled or loses life blood, how can it support you when you and your family need it most?" says Lauman ?Developing a disability is hard enough, let alone developing a disability and running through your nest egg that took you a lifetime to accumulate, in less than a couple of years!? Added Lauman. We asked what is the answer and Lauman added, ?Planning ahead, way ahead! This is not the type of coverage that you want to put on the back burner; if you do then you might be planning to fail.?
In 2010, the average 401k has gotten healthier in recent years, despite the uncertain financial market. The average balance rose to a 10-year high of $71,500 last year, up 11.5% from 2009, according to a February report from Fidelity Investments. Good news! But the healthiest fund can lose capacity fast when a family lacks long-term care insurance (LTCi). Any family member -- your spouse, parent, or child, if not you -- may have a sudden need for long-term care, "and your retirement fund may fall victim," Lauman says. "If you don't have LTCi, you're in effect self-insuring, and your retirement money will most likely take the first hit. By purchasing a long term care insurance policy you will be transferring the risk from you and your family?s retirement funds to the insurance carrier." Says Lauman
The math is sobering. According to a recent study by MetLife, the annual cost of a private room in a nursing home rose to more than $83,500 in 2010, up 4.6% from 2009 -- enough to wipe out the average 401k in less than a year. If you or a family member could get by with in-home care, the financial damage could be less or it could be more depending on the type of LTC care one would need. According to MetLife, the cost of in-home health care by a trained assistant was $21 per hour in 2010 and the cost is rising very fast due to the demand of certified help. If this care were needed an average of six hours a day, the cost would be about $46,000 for a year, leaving $25,500 in the average 401k. Early-withdrawal penalties, however, would decrease the balance. "Also, care might be needed for two, three or more years," Lauman adds. "When a LTC disability hits a family, in most cases, more than one family member might be required to help emotionally and financially."
"The numbers explain why many financial advisors, not just medical professionals, are advising their clients to consider long-term care insurance," says Lauman. "Financial health, not just physical well-being, is at stake. If you won't buy a long-term care policy for yourself, buy one for your family, spouse, IRA or 401k."

What Do You Get With Affiliate Marketing Profit Secrets?

The course is made up of five live webinars which are set at a week apart. I found the weekly interval was useful as I could then assimilate the material presented and do the homework assignment which she gives you to do at the end of each webinar.

You are able to ask questions during the webinar if you need clarification on any point.

I found the homework assignments to be a good way for me to put into action all that I had learnt. As I was working on the tasks, I could refer back to the replays of the webinars to revise what I needed.

As well as getting the webinar replays you receive the audio recordings too. I loaded these onto my mp3 player and was able to listen and learn away from my computer while doing other things.

You will also receive other resources throughout the course such as a document which is a daily guide on what to do each day for a month and a practical marketing plan. I have found these to be most helpful as I just refer to them step by step and rinse and repeat for each product I am promoting. These two documents leave you in no doubt as to the steps required to be successful.

There is a bonus to the Affiliate Marketing Profit Secrets course. The bonus is Information Products Creation training. This bonus training is especially useful as product creation is the next step for an internet marketer to add to their online business to ensure growth and multiple streams of income.

Drug-related deaths outnumber traffic fatalities in the U.S. ? Health ...

LOS ANGELES ? Propelled by an increase in prescription narcotic overdoses, drug deaths now outnumber traffic fatalities in the United States, a Los Angeles Times analysis of government data has found.

Drugs exceeded motor vehicle accidents as a cause of death in 2009, killing at least 37,485 people nationwide, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

While most major causes of preventable death are declining, drugs are an exception. The death toll has doubled in the last decade, now claiming a life every 14 minutes. By contrast, traffic accidents have been dropping for decades because of huge investments in auto safety.

Public health experts have used the comparison to draw attention to the nation?s growing prescription drug problem, which they characterize as an epidemic. This is the first time that drugs have accounted for more fatalities than traffic accidents since the government started tracking drug-induced deaths in 1979.

Fueling the surge in deaths are prescription pain and anxiety drugs that are potent, highly addictive and especially dangerous when combined with one another or with other drugs or alcohol. Among the most commonly abused are OxyContin, Vicodin, Xanax and Soma. One relative newcomer to the scene is fentanyl, a painkiller that comes in the form of patches and lollipops and is 100 times more powerful than morphine.

Such drugs now cause more deaths than heroin and cocaine combined.

?The problem is right here under our noses in our medicine cabinets,? said Laz Salinas, a sheriff?s commander in Santa Barbara, which has seen a dramatic rise in prescription drug deaths in recent years.

Overdose victims range in age and circumstance from teenagers who pop pills to get a heroinlike high to middle-aged working men and women who take medications prescribed for strained backs and bum knees and become addicted.

A review of hundreds of autopsy reports in Southern California reveals one tragic demise after another: A 19-year-old Army recruit who had just passed his military physical took a handful of Xanax and painkillers while partying with friends. A groom, anxious over his upcoming wedding, overdosed on a cocktail of prescription drugs. A teenage honors student overdosed on painkillers her father left in his medicine cabinet from a surgery years earlier. A toddler was orphaned after both parents overdosed on prescription drugs months apart. A grandmother suffering from chronic back pain apparently forgot she?d already taken her daily regimen of pills and ended up double dosing.

Many died after failed attempts at rehab ? or after using one too many times while contemplating quitting. That?s apparently what happened to a San Diego woman found dead with a fentanyl patch on her body, one of five she?d applied in the 24 hours before her death. Next to her on the couch was a notebook with information about rehab.

The seeds of the problem were planted more than a decade ago by well-meaning efforts by doctors to mitigate suffering, as well as aggressive sales campaigns by pharmaceutical manufacturers. In hindsight, the liberalized prescription of pain drugs ?may in fact be the cause of the epidemic we?re now facing,? said Linda Rosenstock, dean of the University of California, Los Angeles School of Public Health.

In some ways, prescription drugs are more dangerous than illicit ones because users don?t have their guard up, said Los Angeles County Sheriff?s Sgt. Steve Opferman, head of a county task force on prescription drug-related crimes. ?People feel they are safer with prescription drugs because you get them from a pharmacy and they are prescribed by a doctor,? Opferman said. ?Younger people believe they are safer because they see their parents taking them. It doesn?t have the same stigma as using street narcotics.?

Lori Smith said she believes that?s what her son might have been thinking the night he died six months shy of his 16th birthday. Nolan Smith, of Aliso Viejo, loved to surf, sail and fish with his brother and father. He suffered from migraines and anxiety but showed no signs of drug abuse, his mother said.

The night before he died in January 2009, Nolan called his mother at work, asking for a ride to the girls basketball game at Aliso Niguel High School. Lori told him she couldn?t get away.

When Nolan didn?t come home that evening, his parents called police and his friends. His body was found the next morning on a stranger?s front porch.

A toxicology test turned up Zoloft, which had been prescribed for anxiety, as well as a host of other drugs that had not been prescribed, including Valium, Xanax, morphine and marijuana.

All investigators could give the family were theories.

?They said they will have parties where the kids will throw a bunch of pills in a bowl and the kids take them without knowing what they are,? Lori said. ?We called all of his friends, but no one would say they were with him. But he must have been with someone. You just don?t do that by yourself.?

The triumph of public health policies that have improved traffic safety over the years through the use of seat belts, air bags and other measures stands in stark contrast to the nation?s record on prescription drugs. Even though more people are driving more miles, traffic fatalities have dropped by more than a third since the early 1970s to 36,284 in 2009. Drug-induced deaths had equaled or surpassed traffic fatalities in California, 22 other states and the District of Columbia even before the 2009 figures revealed the shift at the national level, according to the Times analysis.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention collects data on all causes of death each year and analyzes them to identify health problems. Drug-induced deaths are mostly accidental overdoses but also include suicides and fatal diseases caused by drugs.

The CDC?s 2009 statistics are the agency?s most current. They are considered preliminary because they reflect 96 percent of death certificates filed. The remaining are deaths for which the causes were not immediately clear.

Drug fatalities more than doubled among teens and young adults between 2000 and 2008, years for which more detailed data are available. Deaths more than tripled among people aged 50 to 69, the Times analysis found. In terms of sheer numbers, the death toll is highest among people in their 40s.

Overdose deaths involving prescription painkillers, including OxyContin and Vicodin, and anti-anxiety drugs such as Valium and Xanax more than tripled between 2000 and 2008.

The rise in deaths corresponds with doctors prescribing more painkillers and anti-anxiety medications. The number of prescriptions for the strongest pain pills filled at California pharmacies, for instance, increased more than 43 percent since 2007 ? and the doses grew by even more, nearly 50 percent, according to a review of prescribing data collected by the state.

Those prescriptions provide relief to pain sufferers but also fuel a thriving black market. Prescription drugs are traded on Internet chat rooms that buzz with offers of ?vikes,? ?percs? and ?oxys? for $10 to $80 a pill. They are sold on street corners along with heroin, marijuana and crack. An addiction to prescription drugs can be costly; a heavy OxyContin habit can run twice as much as a heroin addiction, authorities say.

On a recent weekday morning, Los Angeles County undercover sheriff?s deputies posing as drug buyers easily purchased enough pills to fill a medicine cabinet on a sidewalk a few blocks south of Los Angeles City Hall.

The most commonly abused prescription drug, hydrocodone, also is the most widely prescribed drug in America, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency. Better known as Vicodin, the pain reliever is prescribed more often than the top cholesterol drug and the top antibiotic.

?We have an insatiable appetite for this drug ? insatiable,? Joseph T. Rannazzisi, a top DEA administrator, told a group of pharmacists at a regulatory meeting in Sacramento.

In April, the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy announced initiatives aimed at stanching prescription drug abuse. The plans include a series of drug take-back days, modeled after similar programs involving weapons, in which consumers are encouraged to turn leftover prescription drugs in to authorities. Another initiative would develop voluntary courses to train physicians on how to safely prescribe pain drugs, a curriculum that is not widely taught in medical schools.

Initial attempts to reverse the trend in drug deaths ? such as state-run prescription drug-monitoring programs aimed at thwarting ?doctor-shopping? addicts ? don?t appear to be having much effect, experts say.

?What?s really scary is we don?t know a lot about how to reduce prescription deaths,? said Amy S.B. Bohnert, a researcher at the University of Michigan Medical School who is studying ways to lower the risk of prescription drugs.

?It?s a wonderful medical advancement that we can treat pain,? Bohnert said. ?But we haven?t figured out the safety belt yet.?
