01/01/2012 06:34:06 AM

Detroit have moved clear on points of St Louis in the NHL Central division, after they shutout the Blues in a 3-0 result on Saturday.

The Red Wings exploded into life in the second period at their Joe Louis Arena, with goals to Johan Franzen, Justin Abdelkader and Jiri Hudler coming in a 12-minute purple-patch.

The win took Detroit two points clear of St Louis in second place in Central, but still three points shy of leaders Chicago.

NHL newcomers Winnipeg earned their third victory in succession with a 3-2 triumph over Toronto, to maintain second spot in Southeast.

Ottawa accounted for Buffalo 3-2, while Florida edged Montreal by the same scoreline.

Tampa Bay enjoyed a runaway 5-2 win over Carolina, after Steven Stamkos completed a hat-trick with the go-ahead goal in the third period.

New Jersey scored twice in the opening period, to set up a 3-1 win over Pittsburgh, while the lowly New York Islanders finished 2011 in style, clocking up back-to-back wins with a 4-1 result over Edmonton.

In Los Angeles, the Kings came from behind to upset the Northwest Division-leading Vancouver Canucks 4-1.

Washington, Dallas, Colorado and Phoenix all racked up 4-2 wins over Columbus, Boston, Anaheim and Minnesota respectively.
