For 1969, however, the Barracuda retained its own identity and received a light makeover, with a new grille revised interior trim, and a new optional ?Cuda 340 package. This package offered the 340 CID V8, 4-speed manual transmission, hood scoop, blacked-out grille, dual exhaust, heavy-duty brakes and suspension, and E70 ? 14 Red stripe tires. The entry-level Valiant returned for 1969 with new grille and taillight treatments. Mid-size Belvedere and Satellite models returned with similar changes.
A new Road Runner Convertible and Sport Satellite 4-Door Sedan were added to the roster. The Road Runner had become successful enough to garner the attention of car magazines and enthusiasts everywhere. To honor this success, Motor Trend magazine picked the Road Runner as the 1969 Car of the Year. Of course, the big news for this year would be the totally redesigned Fury line. As with all other full-size Chrysler models, the ?fuselage? styling was the hot topic, and Plymouth models looked especially nice in the new sheetmetal.
Like Dodge, the Plymouth had a separate front bumper and grille design for 1969, but would gain the ?loop-style? bumper with inset grille for 1970. On Plymouths, the body sides wore little dress-up trim, which contributed to a cleaner look. Fender skirts continued to be offered by Chrysler on most full-size models, and on the Plymouth they made the car look exceptionally long and low. Powertrain choices remained similar to the 1968 line. The only change to the model line was the addition of a VIP 2-Door Formal Hardtop. Last year?s regular 2-Door Hardtop line was now called the Formal Hardtop, while the previous Fast Top (semi-fastback) was now known as a regular 2-Door Hardtop.
